A woman asks of the world, “Nothing feels real anymore…what could you possibly still believe in?” Featuring internationally-renowned, revolutionary Bay Area musicians, dancers, and theater artists, this immersive, experiential journey will drop you into an eerily familiar and surreal day in this woman’s life. Come witness the ever-present questions in your mind come to life, dance to exhaustion, and find breath in this enveloping expression of our humanity.

This multi-disciplinary vision unites JooWan Kim, a pianist/composer who integrates classical compositional techniques with hip hop for his orchestral Ensemble Mik Nawooj; Crowded Fire Theater Company, which has 20 years experience developing innovative new plays that break traditional boundaries; and AXIS Dance Company, an ensemble that is changing the face of dance and disability.

Participants will also have the opportunity to learn company repertoire and will gain insight to the tasks and skills used to create work in the company. Utilizing the material developed through these skills and tasks, the dancers will then be led through a devising process to create and structure a piece of their own work in solo, duet, small group and ensemble formats. AXIS Dance Company celebrates its 30th anniversary and first New York Season with the premieres of Radical Impact, a commissioned work by newly appointed Artistic Director Marc Brew; The Reflective Surface, a new work by guest choreographer Amy Seiwert; and an excerpt from In Defense of Regret, collectively choreographed by Maurya Kerr, Alex Ketley, and Bobbi Jene Smith.

Marc Brew’s Radical Impact was created in collaboration with Composer/Pianist JooWan Kim, Artistic Director of Hip-Hop Orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj. Working together for the first time, Marc and Joowan explore what it means to be human through music and movement, investigating themes around politics and identity. The work draws on each dancer’s unique experiences and how their stories can be told through the medium of dance.

Bay Area choreographer Amy Seiwert pushes AXIS to a new level of rigor with her new work The Reflective Surface. Featuring an original score by Darren Johnston, this work begins with a ballet foundation which is transformed through Seiwert’s unique quirkiness, kineticism, and layered partnering.

In Defense of Regret rejects dance created through graphic or architectural vantage points to prioritize movement as a map of our interior landscapes. An excerpt of Alex Ketley’s contribution to the work is featured.
