On December 20, 2016 in Downtown Oakland, AXIS will host a West Coast Regional Convening on the Future of Physically Integrated Dance in the United States. I am writing to request your participation in this unprecedented gathering of approximately 60 dance practitioners, choreographers, dancers, educators, producers and representatives from funding institutions, service organizations, and presenters from across the West Coast of the United States.
The agenda for our time together is being informed by our experience in the field these last 28 years, research that examines the arc of activity since the last major gathering of integrated dance in the USA held in Boston in 1997, and results from a national survey that was circulated this summer. The West Coast Regional Convening is the last of six regional town halls during 2016, which have continued the conversation from our three-day National Convening in May. More information can be found on our website at http://www.axisdance.org/advocacy/
It is my sincere hope that you will be able to participate in this event and help create an alliance with strongholds to move our amazing field forward.
We will meet at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts at 1428 Alice St, Oakland, CA from 10am-4pm on Saturday, December 10th. Many details will follow in coming weeks from the AXIS staff or our project advisors and consultants Jennifer Calienes and Debra Cash.
This series of convenings on the Future of Physically Integrated Dance were made possible through the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundations Leadership in Dance Award. This honor recognizes and confirms AXIS’ almost thirty years of creating, performing, teaching, and advocating for high artistic standards in dance and equity for people with disabilities in the performing arts.
We look forward to seeing you on December 10th.
