AXIS Dance Company and our Guest Artistic Director Marc Brew are looking for a Rehearsal Director for a 15-18 week contract beginning in late July 2016.

AXIS Dance Company exists to change the face of dance and disability. Based in Oakland, CA, AXIS is one of the world’s
most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities. Under the Artistic Direction of Judith
Smith, the Company has collaborated with leading contemporary choreographers and composers. AXIS has toured
nationwide as well as internationally. AXIS was featured twice on FOX TV’s So You Think You Can Dance and has been
honored with seven Isadora Duncan Dance Awards. Through our education and outreach program, Dance Access,
thousands of children and adults of all ages and abilities are inspired to dance each year.

AXIS Dance Company is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong leadership, teaching and communications
skills. Collaboration and teamwork are at the heart of the creation and performance of our repertory and delivery of our
extensive dance education and outreach program for people of all ages with and without disabilities. Candidate must be
willing to participate fully in our extensive program of ambassadorial work.

The Rehearsal Director reports directly to the Artistic Director and works closely with the Artistic Director and other staff at
home and on tour. The Rehearsal Director will ensure all repertory is well rehearsed and the production and performance
qualities are of high artistic excellence to represent the company nationally and internationally. The Rehearsal Director is
the point person when the Artistic Director is not on tour or in the studio.

Duties include:

Dancer Management:
● Act as liaison to Artistic Director
● Update and communicate schedules and event details with dancers and collaborating artists
● Plan and teach company class
● Oversee professional development for dancers
● Schedule and oversee dancer meetings
● With the Artistic Director, conduct annual dancer reviews
● Oversee apprentices in collaboration with the Artistic Director

Rehearsal Management:
● Develop rehearsal schedule in consultation with Artistic Director and maintain calendar updates
● Establish positive and productive rehearsal culture and organize and oversee rehearsals when Artistic Director isn’t              present
● Assist the Artistic Director when present in rehearsals
● Submit and confirm studio requests to Office Administrator
● Oversees rehearsal music and video as needed
● Track rehearsals daily and submit hours monthly
● Maintain good time management and lead by example
● Schedule in planning time for education/ workshops
● Liaise with collaborators, teachers and choreographers to book them for workshops, classes and rehearsals

Tour Management:
● Point person on tour when Artistic Director isn’t present
● Liaison between Dancers to Production/Stage Manager
● Provide input into scheduling and tech schedule in consultation with Production/Stage Manager
● Ensure all activities run to schedule in discussion with Production/Stage Manager
● With the Artistic Director and Community Engagement Manager plan and implement education/outreach and tour
● Set, Props and Costume organization
● Responsible for all music and all music and light cues when Production Manager is not present
● When the Artistic Director is not on tour you will be responsible to stage the work for tech and dress rehearsal and
    give notes to dancers and production team. Otherwise you will assist the Artistic Director as required
● Teach company class/warm up
● Ensure the performance and education work presented is of the highest artistic quality to best represent the company
● Support social media updates, media interviews, photo calls networking and public engagements to represent the
   company and organize with dancers as required

Community Engagement:
● Liaise with Community Engagement Manager in consultation with the Artistic Director on all education bookings and programming
● Assist Artistic Director and Community Engagement Manager in planning education/outreach
● Manage and rehearse the education repertoire as required by the Artistic Director and Community Engagement
● Ensure correct music, props and costumes for rehearsal, workshops, assemblies, classes and performance
● Schedule time for planning and evaluation of workshops, teaching and education performances and activities
● While on site, Is the lead person to liaise and represent the company for education work in schools, theatres and

● Attend staff meetings, board retreats and planning meetings as needed
● Be involved in artistic planning meetings and set clear goals and timelines in realizing artistic aims
● Represents AXIS in press and in public engagements and networking opportunities

● Willingness and ability to work additional hours outside a Monday through Friday and 9am to 6pm schedule, as

Competitive Salary, depending on candidate's experience. This is a part-time independent contractor position.
