Following Flow- how does one thing lead to another? How do we interrupt it? What are our habits and how do we embrace or change them? Through a range of tasks, scores, and various movement forms, Sonsheree will find ways to challenge, build and create new pathways of moving both as a solo body and as an ensemble.

Sonsherée is a dancer, teacher, choreographer and costume designer. Her art is informed by a history of durational practice with dance, yoga and running. She creates dances based on everyday life observed from animals, art history and landscapes. From 2005-2015, she was a performing, teaching artist and associate artistic director with AXIS Dance Company. Currently, she is creating her own work as a performance artist and can be seen performing for various companies in the Bay Area. She is thrilled to return to AXIS as a teacher and
assistant to Artistic Director, Marc Brew.

This class is designed to increase and enhance the technical and performance abilities of experienced students in the discipline of contemporary dance. Information and exercises for the movement phrases are drawn from a variety of technical and improvisational mechanisms and vocabulary. Through the practice and execution of center floor exercises, traveling patterns and choreographed phrases, the class places emphasis on spatial awareness, proper alignment, increased strength and flexibility, musicality and rhythm. The class focuses on an economical approach to movement by emphasizing the use of the pelvis and spine and addresses the ways one’s inner landscape, mind, and ego affect a movement vocabulary’s overall aesthetic.

Class will explore the rich technique developed by Lester Horton.
The movements are devised to fortify, stretch and reshape the body to help produce an accomplished, well- rounded, contemporary dancer. Dancers work with a broad range of expression, musicality and strong technical skill. The Horton technique is unique and insightful. Its approach to anatomy is extremely logical and very compatible with ballet.
We will examine the fundamentals of this dynamic technique, exploring elements of the studies and fortifications, and incorporating them into choreographic phrases both in the center and across the floor. This class is intended for students with dance experience, who are interested in an introduction to modern dance or in learning the fundamentals of the Horton technique. No previous experience with Horton is required.

Katherine Nauman is a Horton technique instructor, performer and arts administrator. In California she has taught at: UC Berkeley, SF State University, CSU Summer Arts, Alonzo King LINES Dance Center, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and Dance Connection Palo Alto, and currently serves on faculties for the LINES Ballet education programs. In the Bay Area she has performed with Ray Tadio, Sculpted Motion, SOULSKIN Dance and Mary Carbonara Dances. She was teaching and choreographic assistant to her mentor, Horton master teacher, Milton Myers, and taught at Juilliard, LaGuardia High School, The Ailey School and STEPS Studio NYC, among others. Katherine has toured internationally as both Horton teacher and performer at festivals such as: Jacob's Pillow (MA), Internationale Tanz-Wochen Wien (Austria), Vortex Jazz Congress (Moscow, Russia) and Summer Arts at California State University Monterey Bay.
