MASTERCLASSES / WORKSHOPS
Disciplines for the Hidden Body - Imagery, Form, and Improvisation
taught by Shinichi Iova-Koga
Our work is to transform (sometimes abruptly, sometimes gently) the space within the body. The process of creating performance work is
meant to expand and inform the life of the dancer/human. We draw from experience or sensation or dream to crystallize the reason for movement. Conventional or unconventional, we confront the question “What is dance?” Sometimes we break conventions to expand the vision of dance. Sometimes we tread the known territory to discover the depths of everyday existence. Through reduction, we clarify our
personal reality to reveal the beauty, grotesqueness and humor we carry. Working in groups, duets and solo, we practice listening to interior and exterior impulses simultaneously. For dancers with and without disabilities.
SHINICHI IOVA-KOGA, originally a photographer, filmmaker and theater director, entered the world of Butoh dance in 1991 (initially through Akeno Ashikawa and then consistently through Hiroko Tamano and Yumiko Yoshioka). Childhood training in Judo (under Yuzo Koga) and early adult years studying Tadashi Suzuki Method of Acting (under Yukihiro Goto) influenced his expressions. Improvisational theater methods such as Action Theater (under Ruth Zaporah) shaped his approach to the process of creating stage works. In 1998, he founded the performance company inkBoat, whose productions reference Butoh dance as well as Physical Theater and filmic conventions. Shinichi examines, dissects and intentionally blurs the line between various media to uproot and communicate stories contained within the body.
