Below, Brett Weinstein shares his thoughts on his first Community Dance Jam experience with AXIS Dance Company.
I myself am not a trained dancer. I don't do anything too technical or complicated. But I'm drawn to contact improv especially for its ability to elicit physical spontaneity and creative expression. Now add three dancers in wheelchairs. One chair was motorized and controlled with a joystick, the other two were lighter and manually maneuvered. I found myself dancing not only with the person in the chair, but with the chair itself. Like in a trio. Then another dimension opened up: the merger of dancer and chair, human and machine. Add the exquisite live music and several other non-disabled dancers, we all moved with and around each other, smiling and filled with a nourishing joy. It rarely gets any better than this.
