Propeller Dance is a physically integrated dance company based in Ottawa, Canada. With a grant received from the American Embassy, they were able to hire an American artist to spend three weeks with Propeller to create a dance that will be toured to various schools and performed for 4th-12th graders.
They contacted AXIS and a few other choreographers in the Bay Area to see who would be appropriate and/or interested. Judy thought I would be an ideal candidate, and recommended me because of my history with AXIS and working with large, diverse ensembles of people. I also have a history of doing sectional work that can be versatile for various sites and unpredictable situations.
I was not sure what to expect, but was blown away by the level of openness and joy that every Propeller dancer brought to each rehearsal. We had a lot of fun while creating a 20-minute dance work I affectionately titled 'Dream a Little Dream'. I wanted to make a dance that was unique and specific to each dancer in Propeller, as well as fun to perform and engaging to watch.
I am fortunate to be working with long time collaborator Caroline Penwarden, who will compose a new piece for 'Dream a Little Dream'. In September I will return to complete the dance, which will hopefully be in their repertoire for a long time.
