My first brush with the company was few years ago. I was lucky enough to see their work on So You Think You Can Dance. However, it was not until last summer that I witnessed an incredible outdoor performance at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Though, this is my first time interning with a dance company, dance has been a major part of my life for the past ten years. I’ve studied jazz and modern dance extensively as a teenager, become obsessed with learning social ballroom, and worked on wardrobe for a few local dance productions. Since dance is such a huge part of my life I recently decided to pursue a career in arts administration. So I was very excited to learn that I was offered the summer internship.
During my first week at AXIS, the Education Director, Annika, invited me to see the dancers at an elementary school assembly. Not only did the company perform they also interacted with the students, giving them a chance to share what they saw. It was great to hear how the students perceived the movement and how they quickly synthesized that everyone can dance. Witnessing the positive feedback reminded me why dance is so important to me and how it can leave an impact on people.
I’m really enjoying my time so far at AXIS. It’s an incredible learning experience. It’s my third week and I’m getting used to the office and adjusting to the learning curve. I’m enjoying the projects I’m taking on, such as helping out with the upcoming Silent Auction. I’m looking forwards towards my two months here at AXIS and to see what I can learn and accomplish.
