From Christmas holidays visiting family in Australia to New Year in Glasgow, Scotland and then on route to San Francisco/East Bay to start work with AXIS Dance Company on January 6th, I have literally travelled half the globe to get to Oakland, but I am very happy to be here and begin the new year working with AXIS as Guest Artistic Director. It’s fast becoming my home away from home, as I truly do feel welcomed by all.
I was honoured to be asked by Judith Smith to return to work with AXIS for 4 months as Guest Artistic Director as I hold the company with high regard for the exceptional work they do in performance, education and it’s ambassador work within the dance and disability community. Whether I am in the studio with the dancers, teaching class or in the office working with fellow staff there is a real sense of collaboration and team effort within a supportive and friendly environment, which makes creating the ‘art’ a real joy. It is with much excitement that I also have the opportunity to create a new work for the company while I am here which will be performed in the home season at the Malonga Casquelourd Theatre in Oakland on April 11-13, 2014. The new work will be a trio with dancers Sonsherée Giles, Sebastian Grubb and Joel Brown with the support of company dancer Juliana Monin as my rehearsal director. We will be looking at exploring the unknown divide of space and human interaction. So be sure to save the date and book your tickets.
The company also has some exciting performances, classes, open studio and social events so be sure to stay in touch via our website, mailing list and social media pages to be involved in the fabulous work and opportunities the company has to offer. I also look forward to meeting the AXIS friends and the dance community over the duration of my time working with the company.
