Karl Cronin former general manager of The Equus Projects—and named emerging arts leader by EAP/Bay Area in 2011—who is widely known and admired for his dance and concert music management and production expertise will assume full-time duties with the groundbreaking dance company starting on January 2, 2014. Appointment follows months-long organizational restructuring process supported by lead funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to better suit AXIS’s current and future needs as it goes into its 26th year.
Oakland, CA, December 17, 2013 – AXIS Dance Company’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce that it has named Karl Cronin as the dance company’s new Managing Director. Formerly the General Manager of The Equus Projects, Cronin will assume full-time duties at AXIS on January 2, 2014.
“I am thrilled to have Karl join us following months of strategic work to restructure our staff to better suit AXIS’ current needs,” says AXIS Artistic Director and co-founder Judith Smith. “I’m looking forward to being able to refocus my energy and to develop a strong leadership team for this company.”
Cronin succeeds Mollie McFarland who joined AXIS in 2002 and guided AXIS through over a decade of sustained growth. The new Managing Director role was developed during a company-wide organizational effectiveness process, supported by lead funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
"With his depth of experience managing arts organizations, coupled with his passion for dance, Karl emerged from a pack of highly qualified candidates as the most compelling choice for the new position of Managing Director," said AXIS Board of Director president, Deirdre Spencer. "The Board is delighted to welcome him to the AXIS family at this exciting time for the organization."
Cronin began his arts administration career as a Program Associate at the National Dance Project, and has served numerous dance companies, including The Equus Projects as General Manager, Misnomer Dance Theater as Managing Director, and Kinodance as Bookings Coordinator.
“I’m excited to be joining Judy and the Board on the tail end of the company’s 25th Anniversary season”, Cronin said. “I have known and loved the company for years, and look forward to guiding and supporting the organization during this exciting period of growth.”
Cronin is known for his commitment to dance and concert music management and production, and in 2011 was named an emerging arts leader by EAP/Bay Area. He has served on the board of directors at the Dance Complex in Cambridge, MA, and the Bay Area Arts and Science Interactive Collaborative Sessions (BAASICS) in San Francisco, and recently supported the launch of San Francisco’s Center For New Music as interim Development Director.
Cronin earned a BA in Music & Psychology at Boston College, while conducting music cognition research at Harvard Medical School. He is married to entrepreneur and co-founder of yerdle, Carl Tashian, and lives in San Francisco.
