New to AXIS!

I’m the new AXIS intern, and I’ve already been here for about 3 weeks now. I will be graduating from Mills College in May with a MFA in Dance Performance and Choreography and I can hardly believe it’s coming up so soon! It seems like just the other day I was driving my little Honda across the country from Ohio to attempt to settle into the craziness of graduate school. And now, I’ve accomplished more things that I could ever imagine, and interning at AXIS Dance Company is one of those things.

I’ve been a performer my whole life – and I love it – but now, I’m especially interested in learning behind the scenes work because sometime in the future I plan to have my own dance company. I am blessed to be a part of this powerful team of women putting together and organizing all of the things going on for our 25th Anniversary performances. I didn’t know much about AXIS when I moved to the Bay Area, but I’ve been learning more and more. And being immersed in the environment of a successful dance company is more beneficial than any class I might take in school! Even though I am learning bits and pieces of a wide variety of tasks, all the information is valuable.

Not only does the mission of AXIS excite me, but the work they are performing does as well. I’ve had a chance to watch a couple rehearsals with choreographer Marc Brew for his piece “Full of Words.” The choreography is exquisite, and the physicality and intention of each dancer in the piece is refreshing. It pulls you in to the piece – and leaves you wanting more.

I’m looking forward to the next few months and all the things I’m learning! Hope to see you all at the Home Season 25th Anniversary Performances!
