Continuing my summer with AXIS - By intern Erika

It’s hard to believe I have already been with AXIS for nearly an entire month; the time has flown by! It seems almost impossible to sum up everything I have learned thus far. Not only am I learning from the tasks I have been given in the office, but I’ve also been learning simply by witnessing and listening to what is going on around me.  It is amazing to see how the women that compose the AXIS Staff work both independently and together to accomplish SO much. Even throughout hectic and stressful situations (like a dying hard-drive and disappearing files!), they seem to remain poised and level headed and handle each scenario with both grace and humor.

In addition to working inside the office I have also had memorable experiences outside as well. Annika, AXIS Dance Company’s Education Director, was kind enough to let me join some of the dancers to an assembly at a local Elementary school. I was thrilled to get a first-hand glimpse at another side of the company. The AXIS dancers are all so kind and down to earth and truly made me feel part of the whole team. This experience was incredibly fun and I loved seeing how enthusiastic and excited the kids were. One particularly heartwarming moment was when I overheard a child who was in a wheelchair look at some of the AXIS dancers and exclaim: “HEY, they are just like me!”

Another amazing experience for me was attending the Get in Front performance, which was a benefit for the Cancer Prevention Institute of California held in San Francisco.  11 major Bay Area dance companies were represented, including AXIS! Upon arriving early to the theater I ran into Judy (AXIS’ artistic director); we found a nearby café and she graciously got me a latte (just another example of the down-to-earthiness that is AXIS). Having been a fan for so long, it was mind-blowing to finally see them in person on stage. Rodney and Sonsheree performed the duet To Color me Different. They had the entire audience captivated. Their duet contrasted so much from anything else in the whole performance and really stood out (...but maybe I am biased :)) I feel that for many audience members it was their first exposure to AXIS and I am confident they are all new AXIS fans.

So far this summer with AXIS has been both rewarding and fun, and I am eager for it to continue!
