I am considered a local Disability Rights Activist and co-owner of a popular local greeting card business. I became involved in the Friends of Kenney Cottage Garden community project in order to make sure that this community garden was the first to be accessible for people with disabilities. I envision the garden as a place where people with disabilities can meet their neighbors and participate in community events. Naturally, I am the ADA Coordinator for Friends of Kenney Cottage Garden. Shira holds a BA in American Studies with an emphasis on disability studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Ever since I checked out the city of Berkeley & Oakland’s services and activities for people with disabilities during my community college years, I always dream of performing for AXIS in front of a large audience, which is my goal that needs to fulfill someday. For the past several years while I studied at Cal, I attended a few AXIS performances and dance classes. Since graduating from Cal in May 2008, I have doing many volunteer jobs and internships, especially in administrative, writing, and marketing arenas hoping to land some real employment. I look forward to working with AXIS to improving my employment skills in these administrative areas, especially in grant writing, and organizing events. I am thrilled to be part of such an amazing team at AXIS and eager to see what this endeavor and challenge has in store for me.
My passion is to write poems, to create art, to enjoy doing fun activities with friends and family like dancing, participate in various adventurous sports, to advocate for the less fortunate, and the disabled. My motto on life: to live life to the fullest, to have perseverance, conquer your dreams, and say “Carpe Diem”.
