A letter to Mayor Kwan

Hello Mayor Kwan, I know you have a very difficult job right now. I want you know the arts in Oakland are important to me and I am asking you to keep arts funding in place.   The arts are one of —if not the best thing about Oakland.  They enrich the community that I live and work in.  They give youth and adults a safe haven where everyone can be and do their best. They are a huge contributor to the economy of Oakland.  But most of all they reflect the diversity and soul of our city and show its best side to the world.

The city of Oakland’s financial support is crucial for AXIS Dance Company.  We’ve CHOSEN to stay in Oakland and not leave for SF funding like most of the other contemporary dance companies have done over the past 15 years.  The arts in Oakland must continue to be a priority. Please consider the impact on quality of life and economic development in Oakland and don’t zero us out.  Please make equitable cuts that support Oakland's Renaissance and Oakland's recovery.  The Arts are a strategic solution for our City not just a frivolous past time.

And you catch AXIS on So You Think You Can Dance on Thursday, June 30th, 8pm on FOX.  We wouldn’t be there without the city’s support and a wonderful home base at the Malonga, which has allowed us to grow into a nationally significant contemporary dance company that brings positive attention to Oakland!

Warmly, Judy

Judith Smith, Artistic Director
