AXISInCommunity: Improvisational Dance for All Bodies
A fresh spin on our monthly dance jams
All classes take place at:
Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, Studio E
1428 Alice St., Oakland, CA 94612
$12 per class; cash, card, and check accepted at the door, or register online below. No one turned away for lack of funds. Our inclusive Jams are geared towards movers of all levels, experience and ability. This is a great way to connect and enjoy moving with the extended AXIS community in our accessible studio. An AXIS company member will lead you through instructions for the first 30min of the jam to give you a movement score/structure you are comfortable to explore individually or with others. Our Community Jams are a safe and respectful place for all to dance.
Jams will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. with a 30-minute jam instruction and introduction to the company’s physically integrated dance philosophies. Sourced in contact improvisation, the jams will cultivate mindful awareness and mutual exchange. Contact Improvisation is a physical investigation into gravity, momentum, and weight sharing solo or between two or more bodies. Dancers will move with constant attentiveness to their own bodies, impulses, and trajectories, while listening and responding authentically to their partners.
Wear comfortable clothing, yoga wear, sweats and comfy dance gear that you can move in. Folks typically go barefoot, however wear tennis shoes or dance shoes if you need them. Bring your water canister. To help make our events accessible to all people, please use fragrance free, non-toxic toiletries and cleaning products and other supplies, and avoid scented products whenever possible. However, please note that our building is shared by multiple organizations and that chemicals and scents may still be present throughout the building.
All events at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts are accessible to those using mobility devices. Front entrance and second floor restroom doors have power operated doors with push and kick plates. Two elevators are available as well as a ramp from the elevators into our third floor studios.
While AXIS provides ASL interpretation for select performances and education events, we do not regularly have ASL interpreters available for our in-studio classes. When possible we will work to provide ASL interpretation when requested.
The Malonga Center is a City of Oakland building that includes artist residences as well as resident companies. We request that all people please NOT wear fragrance or scented products when attending AXIS Dance Company events. However we cannot control the use of cleaning products, scents, or common food allergens within the building.
Mens and Womens restrooms are located on the second and third floors. Single stall/all-gender restrooms are available in the theater as well as on the second floor.
Our artistic staff encourages all individuals to share what you need in order to work with AXIS. You are welcome to share this information with our staff at the beginning of classes, or to contact us in advance. If you have any questions regarding accessibility, please contact us at (510) 625-0110 or at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do our best to accommodate you.
