The Malonga Center has all-gender and wheelchair accessible restrooms.
All events at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts are accessible to those using mobility devices. Front entrance and second-floor restroom doors have power-operated doors with push and kick plates. Two elevators are available as well as a ramp from the elevators into our third-floor studios.
While AXIS provides ASL interpretation for select performances and education events, we do not regularly have ASL interpreters available for our in-studio classes. When possible we will work to provide ASL interpretation when requested.
FRAGRANCE AND MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITIES
Although we cannot guarantee a completely scent-free space, our goal is to make our events as fragrance-free as possible for the health and safety of performers, audience, staff, and volunteers with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). We request that all people please NOT wear fragrance or scented products when attending AXIS Dance Company events. However, we cannot control the use of cleaning products, scents, or common food allergens within the building. *Bathroom products at the Malonga will be fragrance-free
DANCING TOWARDS FULL ACCESS FOR ALL BODIES
Do you know ways we can make our events more accessible? Are there accommodations you need to attend that we are not providing? We'd love to hear from you and will do our best to accommodate you. For access requests or questions please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (510) 625-0110
All classes take place at:
Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, Studio E
1428 Alice St., Oakland, CA 94612
$12 per class; cash, card, and check accepted at the door, or register online below. No one turned away for lack of funds. InCommunity is geared towards movers of all levels, experience and ability. This is a great way to connect and enjoy moving with the extended AXIS community in our accessible studio. An AXIS company member will lead you through instructions for the first 30min of the jam to give you a movement score/structure you are comfortable to explore individually or with others. Our aim is to create a safe and respectful place for all to dance.
InCommnunity begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. with a 30-minute instruction and introduction to the company’s physically integrated dance philosophies. Sourced in contact improvisation, participants will be encouraged to cultivate mindful awareness and mutual exchange. Contact improvisation is a physical investigation into gravity, momentum, and weight sharing solo or between two or more bodies. Dancers will move with constant attentiveness to their own bodies, impulses, and trajectories, while listening and responding authentically to their partners.
Physical contact during improvisation is optional for participants--we will provide stickers for you to indicate whether you consent to contact, want to be asked before contact, or do not consent/want to be asked for physical contact.
Wear comfortable clothing, yoga wear, sweats and comfy dance gear that you can move in. Folks typically go barefoot, however wear tennis shoes or dance shoes if you need them. Bring your water canister. To help make our events accessible to all people, please use fragrance free, non-toxic toiletries and cleaning products and other supplies, and avoid scented products whenever possible. However, please note that our building is shared by multiple organizations and that chemicals and scents may still be present throughout the building.
